Where
This year, we’re having a different kind of fall retreat by going to Mission Arlington which is 35 years old (MissionArlington.org). We’ll SERVE others during Thanksgiving break. Here’s the physical address for your maps app: 210 W South St, Arlington, TX 76010. Just in case, there are emergency rooms north and south of us which are 6 and 11 minutes away (TX Health Arlington and Medical City Arlington).
Cost
$50—This mission retreat does not have much overhead, but you will get a t-shirt and all expenses will be covered except for miscellaneous snacks and souvenirs.
Lodging
Mission Arlington will put us up in their own facilities which will include private and separate sleeping quarters for males and females. We will have a kitchen and showers as well. Everyone will be responsible for their own breakfast food except for milk which the church will provide. We will have a fridge, stove, oven, and an ice chest.
Work
We will work from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Mission Arlington will assign our work that day or the previous week. Work at the mission is fluid, so jobs change as jobs get accomplished. Therefore, it’s hard to know for sure what we’ll do on those two days until we’re there. However, we could put together Thanksgiving food boxes, work in the food pantry or clothing ministry, or help in many other ways in and around Mission Arlington.
Cell Phones
Cell phones will be allowed for picture-taking and occassional posts and check-ins with parents. If any students abuse the use of phones during the retreat, a leader may pick up the student’s phone and ration useage. During travel to and from Mission Arlington, phones may be more liberally used as long as students are still participating with the group and are not using phones irresponsibly.
Music & Movies
Consider this retreat an experiment in Christian music and movies. While on the 2-hour drive to and from the Mission Arlington, limit your music-listening and movie-watching to the Christian domain. This is an honor system thing, but take it seriously. NOTE: From the moment we get to Mission Arlington until the moment we leave to go back to Dogwood Hills, your phone is not to be used for gaming, music, and movies. It can be used for picture-taking, video-making, and occasional posts and calls to home.
What 2 Bring
- Servant’s heart
- Bible, pen, journal
- Personal medications (leaders should be aware)
- Trash bag for dirty clothes
- Jacket
- Modest, comfortable clothes WORK CLOTHES for 2 days
- Modest, comfortable clothes to change into after work on Monday
- Air mattress or cot
- Sleeping bag OR bed linens for your air mattress or cot
- Favorite pillow
- Towel & washcloth
- Shampoo & soap/body wash
- Toothbrush & toothpaste
- Brush/comb & any hair stuff
- Deodorant
- Shoes & socks (comfortable for working)
- Flip-flops/slip-ons for dorm/bathroom
- Spending money (snacks & souvenirs)
- Personal breakfast items (Pop-Tarts, granola bars, cereal, etc.—We’ll have milk for you.)
- Personal snacks
- Optional: Cap/hat
- Optional: Phone (if you can’t live without it)
What Not 2 Bring
- Bad attitude
- Spandex pants/shorts
- Tank tops or midriff shirts
- Spaghetti strap, halter, or tube top shirts
- Clothing that suggests inappropriate behavior
- Super short shorts
- Tobacco or alcohol products
- Drugs of any kind (other than valid medication)
- Weapons
- Silly string or water balloons
- Fireworks
- Gaming devices (other than your phone)
- Skateboard, hover boards, roller blades
